Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation
KNOW THE NETS
In the last volume of L&L, ISTE's Research and Evaluation Department offered a series of sce- narios encouraging readers to use the NETS for
Students to analyze classroom events. (Access the
scenarios and ISTE Classroom Observation Tool
[ICOT] at iste.org/learn/research-and-evaluation/
icot.) In this new volume, we will work with the
standards indicators in more detail, looking at
critical differences that determine whether a
standard is met or not. We begin in this issue
with Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation.
If you are observing a classroom using
the ICOT, the rubric (see the table to the right)
asks you to decide whether each indicator
of the standard is absent, addressed, or met.
Addressed means that students have opportunities to learn about or practice an indicator.
Met means that students have opportunities
to actually demonstrate the indicator.
The table presents three examples of lessons
that use technology to teach geometry concepts
and the indicators that each lesson meets or
doesn’t meet. There is nothing wrong with Example 1; it is a common activity in classrooms
with access to digital photography. By itself, it
might not have anything to do with Standard 1,
but a teacher could include all three examples
in the same unit. Students could collect images
on Monday, review polygons and software on
Tuesday, and complete their structures over
the rest of the week. Each scenario enriches the
experience of the previous one. In that case, the

c. Use models and simulations to
explore complex systems and issues
