More and more schools are moving from paper portfolios to electronic
equivalents. Not only does this help the environment, but it also
provides K– 12 students with knowledge of digital documentation/
organizational tools and systems as they get ready to enter college
or their careers.
Electronic portfolios do have some
drawbacks. Teachers note that there
might be procedural problems with
portfolio implementation, access to and
reliability of the technology, and the
amount of time and effort it takes to
create and maintain e-portfolios. An-
other drawback is the amount of time
and effort teachers spend grading port-
folios and maintaining digital artifacts.

are professors in the Special Education Program
at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois, USA.
Using technology in teaching is an area of
continued interest for both professors.
