Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are the disruptive education
sensation of the moment, but do they live up to the hype? Lured by a
free pricetag and easy access, hundreds of thousands of students—
including advanced K– 12 students and teachers seeking professional
development—have signed up for these online courses (see “Massive
and Open” on page 12). Like most new technologies, however, MOOCs
