Video games have a bad reputation as distractors from homework and
other educational pursuits. But recent research has demonstrated that
gaming actually increases students’ motivation to learn and could enhance
their cognitive abilities by boosting dopamine production. Immersive online
games, such as Minecraft (see “Build Engagement and Knowledge One
Block at a Time with Minecraft” on page 20), go a step further by giving
gamers the opportunity to practice the digital age skills of creativity,
collaboration, and problem solving while engaging them thoroughly.
OnlineSchools.com surveyed a number of sources, including Education
Week, Ed.gov, and the NEA Foundation, to find out how and why schools
