to turn in good work because people all over the world could see this.” We posted the student files on the school’s ocial studies homepage, where they would be accessible to local and global audiences. Not only were parents, teachers, administrators, and outside audiences able to enjoy the students’ work, but they valued the efforts the students made to better understand ifferent perspectives on complex global issues. The assignment was an authentic learning experience in that it allowed students to showcase a degree of depth on an important global issue, led them
to be well informed on multiple perspectives, and gave them a chance to
discuss current global issues.

Turn Trouble into a Troubleshooting Lesson
Problem: When using technology with your students, there is a
chance that something can go wrong. how can you turn an annoying
delay into a teachable moment?
Here’s a solution: Build troubleshooting into your lessons. When
something goes wrong, don’t stress about not finishing the lesson.
Think of it as a revision to your original plans. just as teachers model
how to read and write, we can also model what to do when a piece of
equipment or software is not working. as you talk through the problem
and what you are doing (even if you eventually need to call for help),
the children will be learning what they should do. and you may just
find that your students will detect the problem for you.
