Should schools sacrifice class time for professional development?
A clear majority of respondents believe that teachers make better use
of class time when they receive adequate professional development.
The Training We Deserve
If educators are to stay abreast of new
21st-century learning tools, then the
administration must provide a means
for us to get that. They take so much
time from teachers for meetings,
workshops, and other frou frou that
they can darn well supply the training we and our students truly need.
We are already blamed for every ill in
the world. Don’t dare call us lazy if we
don’t want to stay at school longer to
learn new technology. We don’t need
to add more time to our hectic schedule just use what we have more wisely.

Quality vs. Quantity
How many times have we spent an
eight-hour workday learning a new
educational technique or philosophy
but not been taught how to go back
to the classroom and use it? In contrast, imagine walking into a learner-centered professional development
“classroom” where teachers are allowed to have hands-on practice and
create activities or displays that they
can take back and use immediately
and that apply to what they were
supposed to learn. Which is more effective? Does the same apply to class
time? Are students more effective if
they sit in class more or less time, or
are they more affected by what and
how they are taught?

When are we going to realize that
taking instructional time away from
students does not help them no matter
how much professional development
their teacher receives? We are the only
profession that has time after 3: 30 and
summers to “develop professionally.”
Let’s act like professionals to be treated
like professionals and keep our focus
on what’s best for students: teacher–
student CONTACT time! Time is the
best thing we give our students.

Should teachers sacrifice class time
for breaks and planning? Most would
say that is essential. Is learning how
to more effectively teach our kids essential? The best professional development is job embedded and collaborative, and to do that, it must be a part
of the daily schedule. Many schools
now have collaborative planning and
professional development built in to
the schedule so it can occur routinely.
Teachers who do learn and grow professionally as a result of professional
development being an essential component of their work would not have it
any other way. Without continuously
learning, how do we expect to get better performance from our kids?

Co-Teaching Is a Win–Win
We all have sat through pull-out programs and forgotten all we’ve learned
by the time we’re able to apply it. Students also lose valuable instructional
time when they have subs instead of
skilled teachers, so we should minimize time out of the classroom. An
embedded coach who works with the
teacher during real-time practice provides a solution for all.

With budget crunches at the forefront,
schools and teachers are feeling the
hit the most. Teachers need a support network. School administrators
need to provide a way for teachers to
feel wanted and like they are a part of
a community. What better way than
with professional development? It
provides teachers the opportunity to
build a good social network on their
campus. They get to learn and share
with their fellow teachers, people they
can turn to if they get stuck using the
new technology, and it lets them be
leaders on their campus by teaching
fellow teachers about best practices.
