Reading Is Social with BiblioNasium!
Problem: I love using online reading
communities, such as Shelfari and
GoodReads. But I can’t use those
sites with students who are under
the age of 13. Is there an online
reading community just for kids?
Here’s a solution: Yes,
com/#tab/all-books) is a free,
secure, online book community just
for our little people. BiblioNasium is
a social network that offers online
reading logs, virtual rewards, and
the ability to select books based
on reading level and interest. My
students love setting up their own
“shelves” with books that they have
read or want to read, favorites, and
more. Kids can even review and
recommend books to others within
Marjan Ghara, founder of
BiblioNasium, said she created
the site because she was always
looking for the next “good read” for
her kids, but the information on the
internet was too overwhelming. “So
together with my digitally savvy kids
as cofounders, we came up with the
idea for BiblioNasium,” she said.
When choosing books, young
readers are most influenced by
teachers and librarians, friends
and classmates, and parents.
BiblioNasium connects these three
constituencies through tools, games,
and community-building experiences.
Kids need parent or teacher
permission to open an account, and
parents are encouraged to join when
they sign up their kids.
You can see how my students and
families have used it on my blog,
Van Meter Library Voice ( tinyurl.com/

kids figured out how to use our ebook
collection with BibilioNasium at tinyurl.
