New Topic-Level SIGs Added
ISTE has added six SIGs, which have
joined the Special Interest Group program at the topic-level, where all new
SIGs will now begin. is re ects the
new three-tiered structure to the SIG
Program (See ISTE in Action, L&L,
August 2008), a change that will allow
SIGs to form around cutting-edge ideas
and technologies before taking on all the
duties of the more established SIGs. e
new topics include:
Arts Educators. SIGAE is for arts educators who make use of technology to enhance teaching and learning and to help
them connect and share best practices.
Digital Storytelling. SIGDS is for those
who want to explore the power of storytelling across the curriculum and to create collaborative opportunities for everyone to participate in storytelling.
Games and Simulations. SIGGS is for
those dedicated to understanding and
advancing the use, integration, develop-
m ent, and evaluation of games and
simulations for teaching and learning.
Independent Schools. SIGIS is a
forum for supporting the needs of
independent school educators based
on features such as individual missions,
clientele, and funding models.
Music and Technology. SIGMT is for
those who want to share and disseminate
research and best practices in creating, performing, listening to, and understanding
music with the assistance of technology.
Technology in A erschool Programs.
SIGTAP is for educators who wish to
develop e ective means for integrating
technology into a er-school programs.

ISTE Lauds New CIPA Bill
Congress passed a revision of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) in September.
ISTE and the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) advocated for the updated legislation. If signed into law, it would require schools participating in the E-Rate program to
educate students about appropriate behavior on social networking and chat room sites and
about cyberbullying.
“Education, not mandatory blocking and ltering, is the best way to protect and prepare
America’s students,” read a joint ISTE/CoSN statement following passage of S1492.
